The style most people
are familiar with as a "Renaissance
Pirate" outfit is actually more in line with
the styles during the 1600's. During this era, often
referred to as "Elizabethan or Shakespearean",
the clothing style of Queen Elizabeth was often imitated.
This era includes
Spanish court style of the Conquistadors, and most
of the bucaneer/pirate era, as well as the ornate
styles and oppulent fabrics of Dutch, Flemish and
Portugese merchants.
The popularity of the
Pirate costume began its increase after the
first release of the Pirates of the Carribean movie
and continues to increase in popularity, even today.
A lot of people think that the Pirates of Caribbean movies really made the pirate costume popular. But in reality, Pirate costumes have always been a very popular item when it comes to Renaissance styled costumes.
For the guys, these
costumes can look good even without the Johnny Depp "guyliner".
