The term court dress
denotes that the outfit is fit to be worn while in
the presence of nobility, the noble court. These
are typically very ornate with flowing lengths to
the dresses and long sleeves. Colors can vary and
some Renaissance Faires attendees and/or SCA members
will point out the only nobility could wear red.
That is a often told myth. During the actual Renaissance Era it was very expensive to obtain any type or red fabric. That being the case, then only the very rich could afford anything made from red materials. And that is where the "only nobility can wear red" came from. A closer proximation to the truth would have been "only nobility can afford to wear red".
Fabrics are usually
heavier weight and the "look" of a court
dress is different. There's something about
a court dress/gown that lets you spot anyone wearing
one from a long way away.
